Water Sanitation and Hygiene
Unknown to Appalarsa, Sonkor had enrolled in the Shasthya Nirapotta Scheme (SNS) for discounted medical services. But tragedy struck when Sonkor passed away suddenly at the age of 38, leaving Appalarsa overwhelmed with grief and the burden of supporting her family.
Desperate and without guidance, she was forced to borrow money at high interest to pay for hospital bills and his cremation. During this challenging time, Appalarsa found support through the ‘Hygiene Apa’ in her community, who introduced her to the project officer of SAJIDA Foundation’s SNS project.
Though initially hesitant, Appalarsa shared her story and learned that her husband’s health card provided insurance coverage, naming her the nominee. With the officer’s guidance, she swiftly submitted the required documents and, within just 15 days, received BDT 30,000—bringing a glimmer of hope amid her grief.
The insurance money allowed Appalarsa to repay her debts and provide for her children’s education. What had once seemed insignificant, the SNS health card, became a source of salvation for her family.
No longer feeling trapped by her situation, she found strength in the support she had received and realized the crucial role of such schemes in protecting families like hers in times of need.
Now, Appalarsa is determined to help others. Encouraged by her experience, she advocates for health insurance in her community, urging neighbours and relatives to join the SNS scheme. She says, ‘The health card saved me when I had no one else. I want everyone to see how vital it is for families like mine.’
